Light in the Pattern

Light in the Pattern

Light in the Pattern is a reflection around the question of whether our unhappiness or ill content is caused by internal programming or by external circumstances.  I begin by putting it out there that our unhappiness has an internal source; that we are unhappy because of psychological programming or self-criticism, or self-judgement or whatever it might be. But then I think about poverty, famine, violence, war, discrimination – and in the case of Ireland, our troubled history, and institutional legacies.  This song begins with one viewpoint, then moves to another.  It is for the listener to decide and discern.

Lyrics

We identify the source

Of our ill content

As external to ourselves

But it never is

Search to improve

Detailed plans

Step after step

Making alms

Look outside the cycle

Who does it?

Light in the pattern

Who sees it?

Too few

Chorus

Just a few moments

In each lifetime

Scales fall away

Things rhyme

Just a few moments

For each one

Too few

Statistics

On suicide

A nation depressed

So much hardship

So much repressed

It’s a miracle the

Irish survive

What cost?

We identified the source

Of our ill content

As external to ourselves

It was

Power transferred

Colony to church

Too much

And back to the

Drawing board

Disarray

So much abuse

Can’t stay

Who takes responsibility?

Too few

Chorus

We identify the source

Of our ill content

As external to ourselves

And it sometimes is
